ABOUT Union Square Wellness and JOSHUA HORWITZ, MA

Joshua has been practicing bodywork since 2002. In 2001 he started his Reiki training and became a Reiki master in 2003.

At the same time he began taking Craniosacral classes with the Upledger institute and developed a form of Reiki that is especially aware of the movement of the Craniosacral system, called Craniosacral Process.  It is informed by two forms of Craniosacral work, and a subtle form of meditation, Realization Process. Joshua Horwitz first discovered these modalities, separately, as a client in his early twenties while experiencing debilitating back spasms. More than any other modality he'd experienced, these gentle approachs helped change his stress patterns and painful symptoms.

He has also pursued advanced study in the Biodynamic Craniosacral approach at the Michael Shea Teaching Institute and at the Upledger Institute.  By bringing a deep awareness of the movement of the craniosacral system into his Reiki Practice, Joshua hopes to open the door to other practitioners to expand how they perceive their clients' energy.

The 2.5 year Biodynamic Craniosacral certification program Joshua Horwitz completed with the Michael Shea Teaching Institute focuses on thoroughly understanding the human craniosacral system as well as our infant and embryological development.
The awareness of our developmental process allows a practitioner to have the sensitivity to help infants with difficult birth experiences as well as adults with chronic symptoms such as migraines and teeth grinding. Many of our deepest tension and trauma patterns refer back to our earliest experiences and challenges as infants.

Joshua Horwitz has taken Upledger Institute Classes in pediatrics, Craniosacral levels I-V, their advanced Craniosacral program, Visceral Manipulation and Peripheral Nerve classes by Jeane Pierre Barral, DO.  He has also been part of the Upledger Craniosacral teaching assistant team.

In 2012 he became certified to teach Judith Blackstone's Realization Process.  He often introduces these short meditations at the beginning and end of sessions, giving clients tools they can use on their own to become aware of, and let go of, tensions patterns within their body.  What he's seen is that clients hold onto the benefits of this work much longer once they learn to remain in a more balanced place on their own.

Lastly, as a supplement to his bodywork trainings, he has received post-graduate training in Gestalt Therapy at the Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and has completed an advanced seminar at the center for Somatic Studies.

Before doing bodywork, he was a leadership and violence prevention teacher in the NYC public schools and prior to that he spent seven years teaching Pre-kindergarten in NYC where he specialized in music and puppetry. Prior that he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in the College of Social Studies at Wesleyan University.
